Acianthus fornicatus (Pixie Caps)

Often found growing in colonies, this orchid is a deciduous, autumn flowerer and occurs in local forests in well-drained, moist sites. It produces a slender, green flower stem up to 25cm tall supporting a half dozen or so flowers, emerging from a single dark green leaf with purplish underside. The flowers are small, about 10mm in height, and was photographed in April in amongst a large mixed colony of Pterostylis baptistiiand Chiloglottis sylvestris.
